I'm still here. Haven't uploaded any updates in about a month. I've spent the past month working on a virtual machine I plan to plug into the framework to run the monsters and NPCs. When I get it to a running point I'll add it to subversion.

State of the Code

The project is nowhere near complete.

Right now I'm focusing on the world editor, and right now you can currently do the following things:

  1. Create sprites.
Each sprite is composed of an image file and a set of "stances". A sprite set is saved with each world.
  2. Create regions.
Well, mostly. You can create the physical makeup of a region, but you can't populate it. Once a region is created, you can drag it all over the world map. Region flow is defined by two things: placement on the world map and portals within the map. If you want your character to walk north from town to get to a field, you'd better place the field north of the town. Portals are things in the region like doors and staircases.
  3. Create classes.
This is mostly done. You can create the class, assign a sprite to the class, and assign abilities to the class. You can set the name, description, and cost of an ability, but the script editor still needs to be ported over from GameOS1.

Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

I have ripped off a lot of graphics from other games, especially Final Fantasy 2. I do intend to replace these at some point farther along as I get more coding done and have more time to devote to content creation. Or better yet, when I find a pixel-artist that wants to work with me.

While I am fairly decent with grabbing screenshots and constructing sprite maps, this website has been especially helpful in my work: Video Game Sprites. The Video Game Sprites website has a ton of GIF images ready for use from several different console game systems. I have felt particularly GIFted (hah hah!) by their offerings to the online community.

Newsflash
Yesterday all servers in the U.S. went out on strike in a bid to get more RAM and better CPUs. A spokes person said that the need for better RAM was due to some fool increasing the front-side bus speed. In future, busses will be told to slow down in residential motherboards.
